Delivery and Mobility Terms, Defined

The words operators, drivers, and platform teams use every day, with plain definitions.

A

Acceptance rate

Share of offered orders or trips a driver accepts. Low rates slow dispatch and can trigger re-offers.

Auto-assignment

Dispatch that assigns an order or trip to a driver without manual action, based on distance, load, and rules.

B

Basket size

Average value or item count per order. Drives delivery fee and minimum order decisions.

Batching

Grouping several orders onto one driver run to cut cost per drop.

C

Captain

The driver or rider who completes a mobility trip, common in taxi and bike taxi.

Cash on delivery (COD)

Payment collected in cash at handover, reconciled against the driver's balance.

Commission

Share of order or trip value the platform keeps from a restaurant, store, or driver.

D

Dark store

A warehouse laid out for picking online grocery orders, closed to walk-in customers.

Dead kilometres

Distance a driver travels without a paying order or passenger, such as the drive to pickup.

Dispatch

The process of matching orders or trips to available drivers.

Drops per run

Number of deliveries a driver completes in one trip from a pickup point.

E

ETA

Estimated time of arrival, shown to customers for pickup or delivery.

F

Fare card

The set of pricing rules for a trip: base fare, per kilometre, per minute, and minimum fare.

Fleet owner

A business that owns several vehicles and employs or rents them to drivers on the platform.

G

Geofence

A virtual boundary on a map used to define zones, trigger events, or restrict service.

H

Hyperlocal delivery

Delivery within a city or neighbourhood, usually same day or within hours.

L

Last mile

The final leg of delivery from a hub, store, or restaurant to the customer.

M

Masked calling

Phone calls between customer and driver routed through a proxy so neither sees the other's number.

Multi-vendor marketplace

A platform where many restaurants or stores sell through one customer app.

O

OTP handover

A one-time code the customer shares to confirm delivery or start a trip.

P

Payout

Money settled from the platform to a restaurant, store, driver, or fleet owner.

Prep time

Time a restaurant needs to prepare an order, used to time driver arrival.

Proof of delivery (POD)

Evidence a delivery was completed: OTP, photo, or signature.

S

Slot booking

Letting customers pick a delivery window, common in grocery.

Substitution

Replacing an out-of-stock grocery item with an alternative, with or without customer approval.

Surge pricing

A temporary fare multiplier when demand exceeds available drivers.

T

Time to assign

Time from order placed or trip requested until a driver accepts.

W

White-label

Software sold for another company to brand and operate as its own.

Z
